My take on a summer's dress and a design I remake in new fabrics, each year.
Cut loosely and lightly around the body with a feminine empire seam just beneath the bust. The neckline is finished with fine rouleau ties, allowing the opening to be adjusted and fastened or open with a slip underneath, depending on your preference. This dress has room enough for layers underneath when it gets colder.
From the empire seam, the fabric falls into delicate gathering that continues all the way around the body, creating volume and movement while keeping the silhouette light and easy.
The sleeves are finished with the natural selvedge of the cloth — leaving the edge of the handloomed fabric untouched, highlighting the irregularities of the weave to remain visible.
Inside, the dress is carefully finished with French seams throughout, while the sleeve seams are reinforced and enclosed with binding for the clean and considered finish LSJ Studio's Tailord are known for.
Made from lightweight, handloomed organic Khadi cotton, woven from handspun yarn. The irregularity of the weave and the softly mélange, almost cloud-like colour are part of what gives this cloth its character and soul.
Material: 100 % organic Indian khadi cotton. Stitched and crafted in Copenhagen.
Khadi cotton is a fabric I have been working with for sixteen years now, since designing for Dosa in L.A. It carries a history of resistance and self-reliance by Gandhi as a symbol of independence and peaceful resistance, also referred to as the Cloth of Peace.
This is the only dress I have made in this particular indigo Khadi cotton. I am not planning to restock it at the moment and we are out of the fabric, also from the manufacture in India.
The LSJ studio makes handmade-to-order garments using rarely found vintage and reprinted antique textiles. Our practice is the opposite of next day delivery: a time- consuming and creative process, made by a small team of four people. We use traditional craftsmanship techniques that involve composing, cutting and sewing everything by hand, imbuing each piece with a sense of soul and beautiful finish lacking from today’s fashion system.
